About our self-paced courses
Bitesize Irish courses do not focus on any particular dialect – the core learning materials are broadly based on An Caighdeán Oifigiúil (the official standard Irish that’s based on all three dialects). Most of our recordings do have a Munster dialect slant, and Ulster recordings are marked with /U/ in the phonetic guide.
Our Bitesize Irish team have experience in helping people from different backgrounds in learning Irish, and are happy to help with specific queries in relation to dialects.
Don’t get stuck on the question of dialects! Learn what you can now, and you can always specialize later. Irish speakers hear all types of accents and dialects on our national media.
Along with the Irish word/phrase and English translation, every sound file has a “phonetic” guide to pronunciation, such as /ay-reh/ for Éire.
While this system is not perfect – certain Irish sounds don’t exist in English, various English dialects have different pronunciations – we use it instead of the International Phonetic Alphabet so it can be approachable and easy to use for beginners. It’s always recommend to listen to the sound recordings to be sure.
For a more technical take on pronunciation, we recommend the website Fuaimeanna na Gaeilge.
