MEMBER INTERVIEW

Irish in Boston – Interview with member Tim

Grow member Tim chats to Emma about his childhood in Kerry, moving to Boston and returning to Irish after his retirement.

Tim grew up in County Kerry and attended Lissivigeen National School on the outskirts of Killarney. He talks about his Irish teacher Ms Annie Sullivan, a native Irish speaker, who was his first contact with the Irish language. After he moved to Boston at the age of 10, Gaeilge wasn’t part of his education, having attended secondary school and college in the States.

Now since his retirement, Tim has returned to Irish and is finally able to devote the time to learning and connecting with other learners. He began with books such as Buntús Cainte, then discovered Cumann na Gaeilge in Boston and eventually joined us here at Bitesize.

Tim talks about the various ways he studies Irish both by himself and with Bitesize, the importance of speaking the language and the friends he’s made along the way!

Tim is a GROW member of Bitesize Irish. He’s an active member of Bitesize Pobal, our private online learners’ community. He regularly takes part in Bitesize Beo sessions for GROW members. These are weekly conversation practise sessions. The group video calls follow scripted conversation, allowing you to role-play with other learners.
