Getting What You Need in Irish: Conversation Practice at the Health Food Shop

Deepen into Irish language and culture with our monthly members’ workshop.

Our latest Bitesize Beo session was a deep dive into the world of health food shopping in Irish, focused on practical phrases and everyday vocabulary. Each week, Bitesize Beo brings members together to build confidence in Irish conversation. This month’s script, “At the Health Food Shop,” gave participants the chance to practice useful phrases they could use when shopping for groceries. Here’s a look inside!

Session Recap: Getting to Grips with Grocery Conversations

This month’s theme centered around a vegan meal preparation, with our conversation taking place in a health food shop. Our instructor led us through a variety of phrases and vocabulary, such as asking for specific ingredients, expressing food preferences, and even handling a bit of confusion over product locations! Members practiced terms like:

• Miso bán – white miso

• Mála cnónna caisiú – bag of cashew nuts

• Calóga giosta – yeast flakes

These words and phrases might be new for many, but they’re exactly the kind of language that makes learning Irish practical and enjoyable.

Notes from the Instructor: Phrases and Grammar in Action

The instructor shared some extra phrases and grammar pointers after the session, giving members additional tools to personalize their conversation. Here are a few highlights:

1. Everyday Expressions

• Níl aon veigeán i mo theaghlach – There isn’t any vegan in my family.

• Tá mé róthógtha le feoil – I like meat too much.

• Is í mo bhean chéile a dhéanann an siopadóireacht – It is my wife who does the shopping.

2. Grammar Focus: The Conditional Tense

• Answering “Ar mhaith leat?” (Would you like?) is a key part of everyday conversation:

• Ba mhaith liom – I would like

• Níor mhaith liom – I wouldn’t like

3. Extra Vocabulary

• Ach do theip orthu – But they failed.

• Níos costasaí – More expensive.

• An dá rud – Both (the two things).

These expressions made for a lively and interactive session, helping our members feel more prepared for their own conversations in Irish.
