Bitesize Beo: Connecting to Irish Traditions Through Language

Deepen into Irish language and culture with our monthly members’ workshop.

We recently wrapped up Comhrá 16: A Death in the Parish during our Bitesize Beo session, and it couldn’t be more fitting with Samhain just around the corner. This time of year is when the veil between the living and the dead is said to be at its thinnest, and our conversation touched on themes of life, death, and the age-old beliefs that still live on in Irish culture today.

In the session, we explored phrases like “Tá Dáithí tar éis bháis” (Daithí has passed away) and discussed how those who pass during the 12 days of Christmas are said to find Heaven’s gates wide open, a tradition from West Kerry. It’s fascinating to see how these old beliefs and the language itself help us connect with deeper parts of our shared heritage.

For Grow members of Bitesize Irish, Bitesize Beo is an opportunity to engage with the language on a deeper, more cultural level. We’re not just learning words and grammar – we’re exploring how Gaeilge helps us see the world in a different way, bringing us closer to the stories of the past and the communities of today.

If you’re a Grow member, don’t miss the next weekly Bitesize Beo session! There’s always a bit of craic, connection, and, of course, plenty of Gaeilge. 💚
